HSPN TV, originally known as HSPN Videos, was a technological triumph. Before Youtube or Google video even existed, HSPN Videos was streaming videos using a brand new technology that would change the internet forever: flash (FLV) video streaming. This new streaming format was particularly important because it meant anyone, on virtually any computer platform and operating system, could watch videos using a single player. No codecs, programs, or extra plugins were required; if you had flash, you had video.
Shortly after its launch, FLV video streaming took off. Television on the internet was a reality and HSPN was charging ahead. In mid-2006 HSPN Videos underwent a massive upgrade, was renamed “HSPN TV,” and moved to its new home at hspn.tv. The new video player was far more advanced, ran on a sleeker, more user-friendly navigation structure and interface, featured higher quality video with faster streaming speeds and no buffering, and allowed for 720p HD downloadable versions of the HSPN videos. HD video downloads were a major milestone as they allowed any user with an HD TV or large display to stream HD quality video to their TV’s using various devices, including the Xbox 360.
In early 2007 HSPN TV was upgraded for a third time with a brand new way of viewing streaming content. Users could switch between the standard 400 pixel wide streaming version or a 720 pixel wide version that was nearly twice the size offered by any other video streaming website on the internet. While not quite the quality of the HD downloads, the 720 large streaming player allowed users that didn’t own HD TV’s or didn’t want to have to wait for a download to watch near HD quality video instantly.
